Tricks to calm babies and children in medical tests

All parents know that it is not easy that moment when they have to vaccinate our child, they have to insert a stick to see the throat or they have to take an X-ray. Children are scared of these tests or it simply forces them to be very still and they are not able to do so.

For this reason, the Pig-O-Stat company manufactured in 1960 a pediatric immobilizer to be able to take plates from babies without any complication. It has been in use for years but the controversy regarding this device has just been unleashed after the publication of a photograph of a baby inside the Pig-O-Stat Pediatric Immobilizer.

These images have scandalized thousands of people and the photo has already gone viral and although the company is very proud of the product, I would like to see more than one there immobilized.

I think there are other more 'humanized' methods to reassure and hold children when it comes to medical tests, here are some:

- To breastfeed: It is a method used when the baby needs to be blood drawn or vaccinated. It is also known as tetanalgesia and it refers to the calming properties of breastfeeding the baby.

- Swaddle the baby: Using the swaddling technique helps them calm down and relax. It is nothing more than using a blanket or sheet to wrap the baby as it provides a lot of security.

- Cradle the baby: we mothers know that it is an effective method for any moment of stress in which the baby cries. It is essential when after the vaccination the baby seems inconsolable.

- whispering to the baby: the typical 'shhhhh' next to the baby's ear, or a soft melody sung very close to them can soothe them and make them feel more secure.

- Turn him on his side: We will not be able to prevent them from screaming or crying when the doctor is performing tests such as auscultating them, taking their temperature, looking at their ears or giving them an injection, but experts tell us that the position on the side helps them feel calmer.

Don't you think that anything is better than putting the baby in a camera like the one in the image?

Every child is truly unique - hence the name that no one else has! - more and more babies are coming.

Tip

Naming experts, however, say that this tendency will only intensify in the future, both at home and abroad. Of course, we take the example of the children of celebrities - they also compete in a non-secretive way to impress the world with their choice. You remember how happy Balázs Sebestyin was when he picked on the name Benett for the boy, because only three other Hungarian people carry the name. The message is public: the really good name is rare. The fastest way to follow English fashion is where there is no limit to the parents' passage, so you can give your children whatever name they want. So the Victoria Beckham girl was named Seven, and Bingham, the son of Kate Hudson.
Of course, where there are no limits, there will be some fashion waves sooner or later. Now, nicknames are gaining ground, call attention to the new fashion of Nameberry.com is a renamed internet site. They believe that the slogans of the coming year will include Happy, Noble, Loving, Golden, and, because of the popularity of the English Royal Wedding, Royal, but because direction is also confirmed by the stars. Adam Sandler called her Sunny, and Meg Ryan baptized her baby with the name True.

Cute little girls

"In Hungary, of course, the situation is a bit different, as we have a strange pattern, the enrollment has strengthened in recent years," says Judit Raabtz. - Valuing that babies want to express their affection and kindness with more and more popular names such as Lyssi, Tinka, Heni, Holli, Muni, Tandi, Zelka, Mirka, Titti, Lulu, Lilu, Ziza, , Strange. But one can also count on the fact that the double forms of female names are repeatedly repeated: Annadur, Annarous, Annamir, Emmarous. Of course, this also has a follower. Kasuba L. Szilard named the girl Sunflower, and Jamie Oliver gave each of her babies a fairytale name: Poppy Honey, Daisy Boo, Petal Blossom Rainbow.

Good guy

In the case of boys, however, the opposite is true. Even so, there is always a strong tradition and the need for the son to carry on his father's name. Thus Norbert Schobert became Norbika's first son, while following the patriotic line he became the second son-in-law, Zalán. This is a typical choice in Hungary if you have a child.
- In the case of nicknames, the old Hungarian names like Bolyk, Tegze, Devecser, Zsubor are becoming more common - as the expert points out - and the names of the Italian variants are more and more popular. Parents are not held back by Hungarian orthodoxy, so the number of children named Marcsellu, Robertu, Federkou, Leonbard, Eduardu, Rombrie is constantly increasing.
But if you want to be really trendy, check out what the foreign stars are saying, because they are the names of the maacs: Alicia named Silverstone Bear Blun, and Baby Became a Buddy Bear became Jamie Oliver its name is also. But Mike Myers' astounding choice, Spike, also confirms this direction.

How can you be unique now?

Bizarrely, if you want to give your child a name that does not come back every corner, you are best served by giving your grandmother or mom the name. After all, the overwhelming Marija, Elizabeth, and Catherine had almost completely disappeared from school. And in the case of boys, look at the name of the grandfather or great-grandfather. The names of Michael, John, and Andrew are extinct, though it is worth reviving them.

Sorin Lucaci, books, life and Bookland!
How, and when was the BookLand Caravan born?
Sorin Lucaci: BookLand was born in 2011, as a viable alternative to the book fairs existing on the Romanian market, and in 2012 it was positioned as the most important project of its kind in Romania, both in terms of geographical coverage, as well as of duration. Our cultural initiative was received in all corners of the country, with enthusiasm and curiosity, at the same time. Last year we were present in 39 cities - we started on the road on March 6 in Giurgiu and we stopped only on December 24, 2012 in Bucharest - and in each city we populate 6 days, with small exceptions, in Bucharest, Constanta and Suceava I stayed two weeks.
BookLand is a unique concept in Romania: urban book fair, organized in shopping centers in big cities.
Lowering the book from the ivory tower, the motto behind it is: "BookLand comes where people are already. Don't call them, but follow them!"
What is the essence of this book fair?
S.L .: BookLand is a unique, atypical, unconventional fair, a fair that many Romanians have wanted. It is a caravan that, this year (2013) crossed 19 cities of the country, for 42 weeks and replaces both the absence of the other profile fairs, as well as the physical lack of libraries in the country, many canceled or entered insolvency in recent years, both because of the crisis and because of the decrease of the Romanians' appetite for reading. For this reason we have also created an online bookstore (www.book-land.ro) that will remain permanently connected to the need of book lovers, from each city of the country, so we are waiting for book lovers in the cities located in the north of the country (Sighetu Marmatiei, Satu Mare, Carei, Baia Mare) both in the BookLand Caravan, which will stop at Baia Mare, in the Gold Plaza, between March 19 and 31, as well as on the bookstore's website. Readers can also order the titles they want through this virtual library.
It is the third year of the caravan, a journey through the whole country. What makes this fair unique and attractive compared to the others (Gaudeamus, Bookfest, etc.), but also in relation to libraries? What are its main objectives?
S.L .: In addition to the other fairs we bring just this news, the fact that we are trying to cover a large area of the territory of the country, to follow all the book lovers, wherever they are. The generous route of the Caravan and the events organized within the fair, I say, make the difference. The BookLand caravan organizes many artistic and cultural events in each city: public readings with local writers, exhibitions of painting and sculpture, artistic moments made by children from the People's Schools of art, from the Children's Palace, from students from high schools art, young actors from puppet theaters, etc. And in relation to the existing libraries, we try by the quality and diversity of the titles presented to make this difference.

During the BookLand Caravan through the country, we had the opportunity to meet wonderful people, eager to help us in our cultural approach to publicizing and promoting the book. Poets, writers, literary critics, painters, branch presidents of the Romanian Writers 'or Artists' Union. I would list some from Moldova, so dear to me: Carmen Veronica Steiciuc, an extraordinary organizer of cultural events and literary festivals, Gheorghe Neagu from the Literary Mirror in Focsani, Lucian Manailescu from Buzau, Constantin Marafet from Rm. Sarat, the organizer of the Festival of literary creation Titel Constantinescu, Mihaela Garlea university professor from Iasi, but also cultural promoters from Ardeal, Mr. Dorel Cosma, director of the G. Cosbuc Cultural Center in Bistrita Nasaud and many others. I hope I don't upset anyone if I haven't listed them all. I am convinced that in 2013 we will find the same openness and receptivity, from the local cultural communities, from the people of culture, to organize artistic and cultural events in each location, where the BookLand Caravan will populate.
How do you think about the Romanian book market? How are the publishers doing in these times of restraints?
S.L: The Romanian book market is insufficiently structured and capitalized. It is a market with potential, in a continuous movement, publishers make desperate efforts to conserve their resources and portfolio of titles, to overcome well this very difficult period from a financial point of view. Unfortunately, the book industry in Romania is not as profitable as in the developed countries: Germany, France, England. And the financial crisis has reached the book field. We can say with certainty that the book market is declining, and this is reflected in the activity of profile fairs. A survey conducted by the Romanian Institute of Social Studies (IRSS) shows some catastrophic results: over half of the population did not finish reading a book in 2012. In other words, on average, Finns spend 11.3% of salary income for everything what about the cultural spectrum. Not the British, not the Germans or the French, but the Finns! And on the second place is the Maltese! The British are only in fifth place, and the Germans are in the top ten! And the last position is the Romanians! Who spend less than half the occupants of the first place! We are worse than the Bulgarians, our neighbors whom we look upon with such superiority!

In which cities did you have the best sales in 2012, the most successful?
S.L .: By far the biggest success was represented by Brasov. It is indeed a tourist city and this has been seen in the very large number of visitors who have crossed the threshold of the BookLand Caravan, in Piata Sfatului. After Brasov, I could mention in a kind of top, Timisoara, Bucharest, Cluj, Constanta, Baia Mare.

Have you considered expanding the BookLand Caravan to other geographical areas, with Romanian speakers and readers?
Yes, to be honest we thought about Chisinau. I know that from a logistical point of view it is harder, but it is not impossible. In Chisinau there is an acute need for Romanian literature, and not only.
What kind of book is best sold at your fair?

S.L: 44% (in general contemporary literature from Polirom publishing house), but also SF, from Nemira publishing house, essays and literary criticism from the European and Contemporary Idea. Children's books (stories) but also educational books have a significant share, 27%; parents allocate considerable budgets for the school and education book. Then the mother books, parenting books "How to raise a healthy child", "Develop your child's self-confidence", CDs and DVDs, as well as aspirational, motivational, psychology and personal development books from the Publishing House Three. The books with economic profile have a share of 17%: business, marketing, public relations, management.

How many such actions take place in a BookLand season?
S.L .: In the 2012 season I think of the order of hundreds. If you have brought about events, I would like to thank this director Dan Daniel, from the Popular School of Art in Baia Mare, for the support and dedication with which he was involved in organizing the artistic moments within the BookLand Caravan of the Baia Mare.
What expectations do you have for 2013 and especially from the readers of the Baimian readership?
S.L .: We have very high expectations in 2013, especially since we have changed a little the book promotion strategy. Unlike 2012, in 2013 we will populate two weeks in each city, enough time, we say, for book lovers to visit us. Also in three quarters of locations we will be present in squares and parks, unconventional spaces and at the same time very accessible to the reading public. We have high expectations from the readers of Baimara, because we consider it a cultured audience with an inclination towards reading, which is why we return to Baia Mare this year. We want to satisfy the desire for culture and, implicitly for the reading of the Baimarians, we hope not to disappoint them. We come with over 6000 titles from 100 publishers, so a consistent offer of books, music, movies and games.
